Her choreography based on personal narrative, visual environments, and the fleeting logic of dreams, evokes the irony and pathos of human behavior. She collaborates with visual artists and designs her audio scores to make image and sound an integral aspect of performance.

Catlin Cobb has choreographed since 1980 for her company, solo work, theater, film, and video. Ms. Cobb’s work has been commissioned and produced by theaters in New York City, The American Dance Festival, for small repertory dance companies in the United States and innovative theaters including The Center for Contemporary Arts, Santa Fe, NM. From 1984-91 she toured extensively throughout the United States performing and teaching in small communities as a soloist sponsored by Affiliate Artists. Internationally her dances have been presented in France, Bulgaria, Hungary, Japan, Jordan, Tunisia, and Sweden, and supported by various grants including fellowships from New York Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and Art Matters. She has taught in Europe and was a Fulbright Scholar to the Theater Academy of Helsinki, Finland in 1994. Her writing about dance has been published in Dance Teacher Now, Teaching Artist Journal, and dance-related websites. Catlin Cobb is the artistic director of the Artists’ Collective for Social Change, a not-for-profit organization based in Englewood, New Jersey and she has been a consultant for the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.

Ms. Cobb’s training began with the “early moderns.” She studied dance as a child with former member of the Humphrey Weidman Dance Company, Ernestine Stodelle, and at the University of New Mexico with Elizabeth Waters, a former member of The Hanya Holm Company. In New York City she studied and performed with Charles Weidman, attended classes at various studios including The Lab/ Murray Louis, Cunningham Studio, and trained with a variety of teachers of Limon based technique. Later her dance background included modern jazz with Lynn Simonson, ballet with Ernie Pagnano and Cindi Green, West-African dance with Chuck Davis, and Flamenco with Jose Molina. Additional classes and workshop have included the study of T’ai Chi, Body Mind Centering, Alexander Technique, Yoga, Authentic Movement, Afro-Cuban Folklorico Dance in Cuba, and Argentinian Tango.

Ms. Cobb has taught modern dance and composition workshops to young professionals, college level students, and as a guest teacher in university dance departments. As a teaching artist/educator in the public schools, she has taught workshops to mainstream, special needs, and at-risk students, conducted professional and staff development workshops, and developed a variety of programs that address movement as an accessible, joyous activity. She has taught in over 35 public schools throughout the metropolitan area of New York City and New Jersey through arts organizations including Young Audiences of New Jersey, Arts Horizons, Arts Genesis, Artists’ Collective For Social Change, PACT, and Dixon Place. From 1995-1999 she was on the faculty of Artist Teacher Institute (ATi) of New Jersey.

Ms. Cobb has received funding from the Brooklyn Arts and Cultural Association, The Jerome Foundation, and the New York State Council on the Arts through productions at Dance Theater Workshop.
